Box-Pleated Kilt (Tweed)

PhotobucketHEN MOST PEOPLE THINK OF KILTS, they automatically think of tartan. However, kilt wearers have (and have always had) a few different options to choose from. Tweed is one such choice. Tweed kilts are not a modern trend, they have been worn since at least the middle of the 19th Century. Tweed is as Scottish a fabric as tartan and makes an excellent kilt.

Ordering a kilt is a special thing and this process is meant to streamline things as much as possible, not to dehumanize the experience. If you have any questions before or after you make an order, please feel free to contact me.

Measuring

Photobucket
IMPORTANT: It is preferrable to have someone else take these measurements rather than yourself.

1. Natural waist. This is NOT your trouser size! For most people, this is the indent at your side just above the navel. This measurement should be fairly snug.

2. Hips. Measure the widest part of your hips. This can be loosely done over clothing.

3. Length of the kilt. Measure from your natural waist to the top of your knee-cap. Keep your back straight and don't look down. Add 5 cm (2") to this result, or 10 cm (4") if you desire a military rise. For most people this is uncomfortably high on the ribs, so unless your are looking for a military-styled kilt, I suggest a rise of no more than 5 cm (2").

Additional Measurements: Height and Weight. This is needed to double check other measurements.

Note: Measurements 124.5 cm (49") and over will incur a surcharge. Please contact me (john@gaelicclothing.com) for exact pricing.

Glen Tilt Estate Checks (13 oz.)

These patterns are really called Estate Checks, which are/were a pattern used by noble landowners to clothe their retainers. (Much like clan tartan.) Woven by the House of Edgar of Scotland, the patterns below are not official checks of estates, merely designs inspired by them.
