HE DIRK IS A SINGLE-EDGED DAGGER, traditionally worn on the hip or alongside the sporran suspended by a frog attached to a belt. Many dirks were, in fact, recycled from broken sword blades and served as a secondary weapon for the Highland warrior. When fighting with a broadsword, the dirk was held in the opposing hand, point down, which also held the targe (shield).
The name 'dirk' may be derived from the Gaelic sgian dearg, meaning 'red blade' or in broader sense, 'blood blade'. This may refer to the act of thrusting and stabbing for which the dirk was well-suited, or it could refer to the use of a dirk when swearing an oath. Unfortunately, much of Highland history is shrouded in myth, so it is unlikely that we will ever know the truth.
