Hats/Boineide

PhotobucketRADITIONAL SCOTTISH HEADDRESS BEGAN with the blue bonnet. This was a fairly shapeless, homespun article dyed blue. Of the hats featured below, it most resembled the Balmoral or the Tam O'Shanter.

The silk ribbons can be left untied or tied. Merely decoration today, these were originally used to adjust size. Many people will tell you that each method means something different, be it political affiliation or religion. My suggestion is to do whatever you think looks nice. Typically, a Balmoral's ribbons are tied and the Glengarry's are left loose. The same situation applies to the dicing on the band. Traditionally it was supposed to denote Protestantism, though today it is chosen based on personal preference.

All hats are made in the United Kingdom by Robert Mackie, Ltd., supplier to all Highland Regiments. They are made to the exacting standards of the Ministry of Defence and feature 100% wool body, silk bands, and silk ribbon tails.

All prices are in Canadian funds. Canadian residents must pay GST (5%). Ontario residents must also pay PST (8%).

The Glengarry

The Glengarry style of bonnet was said to be created by Alasdair Ranaldson MacDonell of Glengarry and was later approved for use in the military during the 19th Century.

The Glengarry was traditionally worn on a slant with 1" above the left brow and 1/2" above the right. Today it if often worn in a straight manner. Made from 100% wool in a wide variety of colours.

The Balmoral

The Balmoral is usually worn with the brim about 1/2" from the eyebrows with the cockade over the left temple. The cloth portion of the hat is pulled to the right. Made from 100% Wool in a wide range of colours.

The Balmoral was adopted by the Highland Regiments of the British Army in the 18th Century and achieved the form we are familiar with today. The Black Watch Balmoral featured below is in fact the same hat traditionally issued to the Black Watch and is only available in navy.

The Regimental Tam O'Shanter

The Tam O'Shanter (or Tam) is a hat worn by both civilians and military personnel alike. During the Great War, khaki Tams (abbreviated as TOS) were issued to many British and Commonwealth forces. This Tam O'Shanter is the same as those issued to the British Military and is made to the exacting standards of the Ministry of Defence. 100% All Wool. Available in khaki only.

The Cap Badge

Cap badges are affixed to the cockade or rosette of a hat. They usually feature a clan crest or a national symbol such as the thistle (Scotland) or the harp (Ireland). There is a large selection of Scottish clan crests available as well as a smaller number of Irish clans crests. The Irish clan badges feature the original Irish (Gaelic) spelling of the name, not the usual Anglicisation (e.g. Ó Domhnaill instead of O'Donnell). These badges are made in the United Kingdom from solid cast pewter.
